Rec2Rec Explained Do Recruiters Really Need Recruiters It is often called the âdark sideâ of recruitment; it tends to polarise recruiters, and to anyone outside of recruitment, it baffles and confuses people as to what we actually do. Rec to Rec aka R2R aka Rec2Rec (hereonin known as R2R) is a sector I have been part of from its early inception. It started to gain momentum by 2003/4 as a âsector in its own rightâ and I was lucky enough to move into the sector in 2003- by default at the time for a previous employer. In order to dispel some misconceptions about R2R âall being the sameâ and âtarred with the same brushâ in the same way you could state about ANY recruitment market specialism, I would like to explain the R2R market to you, (I will assume you understand the recruitment consultant role); and my explanation is answered in how I think a good R2R should operate and conduct themselves, as oppose to how your experience may have been as a client or candidate. Candidate-driven model The R2R market operates in a very candidate driven model. There have been few economic times where it hasnt been; I stipulate this as having worked through 2008-9, this wasnt the case for a period of time and it shook up the R2R market I think more than any other. Let me start actually with clients/ hiring recruitment businesses. I can remember in my first couple of years in R2R, there were plenty of recruitment companies whom you would âcold callâ to that had a âno R2R policyâ. Nowadays, these companies are the absolute rarity and unless they employ a superior internal recruiter who has a deep network spanning years, or employ experts from their actual sector (for example, property hiring ex surveyors, technology hiring ex graphics or programmers etc) I would argue that this policy is fraught with problems⦠Client relationships are at the crux Client relationships are actually what defines you as a good R2R. In my opinion, the main benefit of trusting an R2R for candidates, is you are using that R2Râs knowledge to find the right employer for your next move. Knowing which companies are in growth mode, ensuring due diligence at the financial stability of a company, getting under the skin of their culture: all of these elements are vital to any discerning candidate wanting to move to the right role, surely? It should be how the job is done regardless of your sector or market, anyway! Selling not spamming It is important to have a portfolio that is diverse so that you can offer great solutions to your candidates who approach you. The R2R client portfolio should have plenty of options but equally not pitched that candidates are basically marketed in a way that they get spammed to any âITâ recruitment company in âLondonâ (insert whatever sector or location you wish here) in a LONG list style. Which leads me nicely onto the candidate element of being a R2R. I have aforementioned that R2R is candidate-driven. Absolutely it is, however, I must maintain that the client ultimately pays the fee so despite it being a candidate-short market, we must respect and be proactive for our clients too. I refuse to let any candidate bamboozle or put a client over a barrel at offer stage. A lot of this assessment is applicable to all candidate experiences, and even more so when dealing with fellow recruiters who experience the job day-to-day themselves! Candidate or customer? As far as I am concerned, the candidate experience should be as professional as the client experienceâ" met in person to gauge skills, culture, motivators: in order to build trust. Obviously this is not always practical but with Facetime, Skype and other video apps, there is no excuse anymore not to have a virtual meeting if in person is not practical. I have always maintained that your candidate is your customer just as your client is. The difference is, your candidate is not the one paying for the result. Bear this in mind all the way through a process. Treat your candidate with the utmost respect and confidentiality is the key: the R2R should maintain a high level of discretion about a persons application and ensure by proxy that their clients also adhere to this. Its a saturated market The R2R market is also saturated, when I started Qui Recruitment in 2005, I had about 2 competitors: over a decade later and make that 32 and counting ?? So what makes a good R2R? A solid network and reputation. Check their endorsements by clients and candidates equally. Are candidates they placed still in their roles? Have they got longevity in the market? If not, will they have the connections and the candidates needed to introduce them to the right firms? Will they have a strong enough network (and I dont just mean LinkedIn!) to find talent for their clients? Are you cut out to be a R2R? If you think you are cut out to be a R2R, ask yourself what motivates you. If it is purely money, I would argue that you will find it a rather frustrating job, as R2R ultimately is a longterm desk and you cannot chase fees. If you want quick money, you may get lucky exhausting your initial first tier contacts, but then after that, your legacy will be harder to predict as you enter the very competitive arena of established players. The biggest threat is always going to be people going directly through friends, ex colleagues and referrals! Be in it for the long haul If you enjoy marketing candidates rather than trying to fill jobs, enjoy building long lasting long term relationships and you are passionate about recruitment, then R2R is definitely the most rewarding sector there is. It is also the toughest in my opinion: the no-shows, last minute cancellations and counter offers all still happen in R2R, and trust me, they all hurt more when the person doing it to you, knows exactly how it makes you feel at the receiving end. The rewarding life of an R2R R2R is a wonderful sector and one I am so proud to represent and hopefully be at the forefront of. R2R is a wonderful sector and one I am so proud to represent and hopefully be at the forefront of: It is no mean feat to get a candidate network of almost 100% referrals and to have an interview to placement ratio of 1:1.17- that is down to hard work, longevity in the market, and always always doing the right thing by everyone and without my own personal gain as my motivator. I would recommend every recruiter and hiring employer to engage with an R2R with a longterm view in mind; donât be promiscuous and have loads of conversations; use a recommendation before you trust them with your requirements, whether thats finding your next role, or hiring your staff. As a client, a good R2R acts as your radar in the market. I like to call myself my clients brand ambassadors when I next meet someone I think is right for them. As a candidate, treat your R2R as you would want your candidate to treat you. Communicate, be honest, have integrity and be honest (yes double honesty please the most important thing. Moving From Early Careers To Advanced Careers Blogging I started blogging careers when I was still at university, in 2010. And once I graduated I started my own blog Career Geek in 2011. Its been three years and Ive contributed over 300 articles, a graduate job search ebook, produced items that have been downloaded more than 25,000 cumulatively. All this without marketing or using any back hand tactic. The reason I blogged careers, was because I had gained enough information to pass it on to other students and graduates. For me it was a less formal way of sharing information. Now though, I think I have reached my saturation point with respect to early careers blogging. I blog less and less about student and graduate career. I focus more on new technology, startups, social media, finance and more experienced careers musings. For this reason, I think I will start a separate blog to this to share my more mature thoughts (- weird analogy that). Career Geek Blog will still be there, it will still be online and still be sharing information from other people on it. Its not going anywhere. I am though. I will most likely start blogging on Career Geek Pro. Career Geek has ad an amazing set of people that have worked with it. Everybody has moved on now its just me now. And thats a weird feeling. How will my Pro blog work out? I dont know yet. The idea is it will be more me and less of other bits. It will still be open for sharing other peoples views, because information should be shared. But for now, I dont know when or how it will work out. At the same time if I do write something for students or graduate careers, then I would still publish that on Career Geek Blog. Steps You Can Take to Conquer All Your Goals - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career There are goals everywhere. Big goals, little goals, realistic goals and extremely unrealistic goals â" everyone has them. Maybe you want to stop drinking. Maybe you want a six-pack by the end of the year (unless youâve already got a two- or four-pack, good luck with that one). Maybe you want to buy a new car. No matter the goal, thereâs a way you can achieve it â" within reason, of course. Making it your personal goal to levitate from your bed to your shower could prove a bit challenging. If thereâs a part of yourself you would like to improve, the only thing stopping you from making a major life change is YOU. Commitment levels canât always be counted on, so there are some additional measures you can take to ensure youâll get to your desired destination. Set Actionable S.M.A.R.T. Steps No matter what goal youâre trying to accomplish, itâs important to remember to establish realistic expectations. Saying to yourself, âIâm going to quit smoking by the end of this monthâ isnât going to enact any real change. This âgoalâ is not just unrealistic â" itâs also intangible. How are you going to stop yourself from buying cigarettes? What will happen if all of your coworkers around you start to smoke? Without an anchor to hold you to your desired life change, your willpower will become surprisingly powerless. Instead of trying to achieve one massive goal, break it down into smaller steps. Make your goals specific, measurable, achievable, reasonable and time-sensitive. Doing so will help you concentrate your energies and provide sensible benchmarks for progress. Rome wasnât built in a day, after all. And donât just stop with S.M.A.R.T. â" also make sure youâre evaluating your progress toward each individual goal along the way. Use An âIf/When-Thenâ Plan Studies have found that the human brain works more like a computer than you might realize. For example, your brain responds to certain cues the same way a computer responds to a keystroke. With this in mind, try practicing an âif/when-thenâ plan. This is a strategy that will help you develop good habits to reach actionable goals by giving your brain cues. The cue can be anything â" a specific time, a place or even person. From there, choose a desirable action to link to the cue. For example, if you want to stop smoking, say to yourself: âIf/when my coworkers take a smoke break, Iâll go to the vending machine and get a drink.â Your brain will notice the positive connection, then begin to associate that cue with a healthy habit. Before you know it, those healthy habits will become second-nature. Develop Keystone Habits In trying to accomplish an over-arching goal with a bunch of tiny goals that all require their own individual routines, itâs easy to lose yourself in all of the various motivations for each routine. Thatâs where keystone habits become very important. A keystone habit acts as a supporting habit â" one that brings together multiple habits and facilitates the development of other related habits as you need them. Keystone habits can remind you of the big goal and keep you grounded in the reasons why youâre reaching toward these smaller goals. For example, if youâre trying to lose weight, drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. That way, no matter what your various workout routines could look like down the road, youâll have developed a habit of staying hydrated that will survive any changeup in your daily routines. Schedule a Deadline All motivated behavior seems to occur in proximity to a deadline, right? Nothing arouses productivity like the fear of being late â" especially in the hearts of serial procrastinators, or people with difficult goals to meet. The best example to use is the marathon. If your goal is to run a marathon, nothing will motivate you more than signing up for and paying to run in the marathon. Be sure to do so before you start doing any preparatory workouts, buy new running shoes or start cutting out soda. If you commit yourself to a specific date and time to complete your goal, you wonât have a hard time finding that motivation to work toward achieving it. And thereâs just something special about a financial commitment thatâs more binding than other commitments. There are only so many things youâre willing to spend 50 dollars on, right? Know the Difference Between Goals and Systems Surprisingly, the biggest stumbling block to your goal achievement could be in the very word itself: goal. You may not realize it, but the word âgoalâ likely sparks some negative feelings in your brain. Thinking about your goals and the fact that you likely didnât achieve them can weigh heavily on your mind and discourage you from attempting any life improvements in the future. So instead of fixating on goals, which carry the connotation of being chores, focus on a system. A system is the method through which you ultimately achieve goals. For example: your goal is to lose weight, but your system is to go on a run every morning. Even when you reach your weight goal, you will continue running in the morning. This system will outlast any goals you might set, subsequently forming a great habit. In the interest of focusing on systems rather than goals, there are three reasons why goals can prevent you from achieving success: goals reduce your happiness, goals weirdly conflict with long-term progress and goals tell you that you can control things that are very much out of your control. Commit to a process, rather than focusing on a goal. Develop good behaviors, and sooner than you realize, youâve become a better version of yourself. Instead of trying to stay motivated with a long-term goal, try accepting that your goal most likely wonât be achieved quickly. And, as usual, stay committed to your system. And finally, instead of trying to control the uncontrollable, build yourself a feedback system. As youâre progressing through your goals, make sure you can see actionable results. This will provide more than sufficient motivation, as well as give suggestions for necessary adjustments.

This post willbe quick and to the point though. I donât likespeaking negatively about anyone professionally, but I feel strongly enough about this trend toalert my readers. There are now at least two large job boards conducting predatory business practices that, in my opinion,are not always in the best interest of job seekers. Much has been written online about resume critiques from The Ladders, and now JobFox seems to be running in the same circles. These boards engage in the practice of sending out a free critique that rips your resume to shreds as part of their strategy to sell their resume writing services. The problem is these write-ups are not assessing your resume. It has been documented repeatedly online that they are form-generated with generic comments that may not even apply to the specifics of your document (i.e., too many bullets and you only have three or you donât quantify your accomplishments well enough whileyour bullets are loaded with #s and %s). A Ladders critiqueis posted here in full. Look familiar? I wouldnât want you to take just my word on the matter. Google âLadders scamâ or âLadders rip-offâ or click through to the following posts on leading blogs in the industry for their take on the situation: Jason Alba has an excellent poston the topic from earlier this year. Use aggregate and niche job boards for job postings, but for advice on your resume, work directly with a certified resume writer. Speak with writers who belong to one or more of the industryâs leading associations (including Career Directors International or Career Management Alliance). Review those writersâ websites and blogs, identify several whose marketing material âspeaks to you,â and then call those on your short list to see which one is the best fit.
